Chapter Fourteen

I brought the bagels into the shop and uttered a question I would have never imagined asking prior to talking to Twila. "Hey, girls. Who wants to go dancing?"

Stormy looked at me over like I was mad. "You know it's ten-thirty in the morning, right?"

We stood in front of the stairs that led up to our rooms. The outline of Esmerelda's body had been covered up by the dogs that circled around our feet. I blew a sigh of relief at this small favor. Reminders of the morning we found her body didn't sit well with me.

"Obviously not right now, I know it's ten-thirty. Here. The blueberry ones are the best." I offered her a bagel from the box. "But, Twila tells me that Esmerelda had a fling with the owner of a local dancing studio."

"Oh, yeah, Ted." Misty said. She popped over and selected a poppyseed bagel.

"Well, I wish I had known you knew that. It would have saved me an hour of listening to Twila."

"An hour?" Stormy smiled. She planted herself on the bottom two steps and bit into her bagel. She shook her dark ringlets in appreciation. "I'd say you got off easy."

"The woman can talk a blue streak," Misty said and plopped down next to her.

"You two all moved in?" I asked. My fingers toyed with the last blueberry bagel. I wondered if I had room in my stomach for another.

"As good as it's going to get," Stormy said. "We need to head over to the grooming salon. We open at eleven. But, we can meet you tonight to go to Ted's Dancing Studio. I think it's polka night."

My grin tightened. I wasn't much of a dancer. Sure, I could bop in place if a catchy tune played on the radio, but a choreographed dance? Count me out. "Polka?"

"Or maybe square dance. How's your Do-Si-Do?"

"What's that?" I asked.

"Oh," Misty chuckled. "This is going to be fun."

As Stormy got up to leave, she turned and looked at Esmerelda's outline on the floor. "Seems like everyone that passes by wants a glimpse of that. You should see 'em trying to peer in the windows."

"It's the talk of the town," Misty added.

"Don't I know it," I said. "Try being swept up in the middle of it. I'm doing my best to keep Ginny's space protected."

They nodded.

"It's a pity having it closed, The Knit Witch." Stormy said. "I always liked coming here."

"Ginny sure is going to get a lot of looky-loo's when she finally does open it," Misty said.

That idea didn't sit right with me. I had only thought of getting Ginny out of jail. I hadn't thought about what it would be like for her when she did.

"Storm -- it's time to go," Misty said and shook her wrist and her watch wobbled around.

"See you tonight!" Stormy said. She wiggled her fingers in a wave.

Misty shook her backside. "Can't wait to see your moves!"

The girls were still grinning at me as they departed. Six little dogs followed behind them.
